Desk Chair Saga
Today you get to see a post about spray painting a chair!
Slow, sarcastic clapping from the crowd
I get it. Totally boring. However, my computer chair saga has been long and drawn out.
It began years ago. I found a free chair on the side of the road. One of the spindles was broken but I loved the lines! Score one for me. I lovingly nurtured this baby back to live.
Repairing the spindle, gluing loose joints, stripping and sanding, etc. I sealed it with teak oil. Total joy over finding this chair!
I lived with this chair…always thinking that I should spray paint it yellow. Then one day it happened. The chair started to fall apart again. The spindle was re-broken from the weight of a child using it as a step. It was held together with a single Christmas present ribbon for more than two years. Then the spindle took a turn for the worse. Now its a hazard to have sticking out with children running around.
So sad. This chair was completely my style!
Then a few weeks back I saw ANOTHER free chair on the side of the road. This one was a far cry from the first chair, but its FREE. Of course I backed up and threw it in the back of my car like the crazy women I am. This chair didn’t have the style, but it can at least be painted the yellow I was longing for.
It was previously fixed with some sort of weird epoxy. The back is loose, but still a huge improvement over the Christmas ribbon band aid and the ER hazard on the other chair.
Then I sprayed it yellow!
After many years…I finally have a yellow computer chair!
I have a feeling this chair knows it’s not as loved as the last. It knows that if it wasn’t yellow, it would have been relegated to the nearest landfill. It hangs onto hope that it doesn’t fall apart like its predecessor.
The Distant Future…The Distant Future
All of this trouble over these obviously troublesome, free chairs. Why not just buy a chair? you ask. Well…I have been looking for something that is worth buying that isn’t $500. Some day I may be able to justify a $500 desk chair, but as of today, I am happy with my free, yellow chair!
So that’s it! Love it? Leave a comment. Hate it? See if you can do better with your side of the road find! 😉
