IKEA Maskros Dining Room Light Hack
Back again to share an easy and fairly quick Ikea Maskros hack. This Ikea staple can be modified to make quite the statement dining room pendant!
When we moved into our home, it was missing a few light fixtures here and there. My first goal was to get some lights in quickly…and on the cheap! Ikea is so reasonable for practically everything, so it was a good fit. However, none of the lights “spoke” to me. Until I found Little Green Notebook’s DIY Sputnik Chandelier post. This was an Ikea fixture that I could swing in my place!
My first step was to paint the entire thing gold. I choose Martha Stewart’s Liquid Gilding. It gave depth that spray paint could not.
That being said…I totally would have spray painted it gold first and then used the gilding over it. Would have saved a ton of time trying to cover the white and silver! I had a set of paint brushes like this to apply the gilding. You’ll need spirits to clean up if you decide to tackle this project.
Word of caution: Use the gilding outside or in a very well ventilated area. Its fine once its dry, but while painting it is extremely stinky!
I was ready and willing to follow Little Green Notebook’s step by step…
But then I came to my senses and took the easy way out. I decided to not put the paper flowers on the light. Way too much work for me! Initially I thought I would be disappointed with the results, but now I am actually happy I am lazy. I loved the original hack, but for my home, this hack fits better anyway. (and I saved so much time that I was able to knit a few pairs of slippers…win win)
I think that this would benefit from the addition of some sort of washers to finish off the ends. You could hot glue them on before you paint. It would look great. Why has complacency become the norm in my life? My 20 something year old self would have totally busted that out. I look back at her and see how much time she really had! *sigh*
Regardless…I now have a cheap dining light that brings me joy every time I step foot into the room!
Why have this….
When you can have this…
So that’s it! Love it? Leave a comment. Hate it? See if you can do better in your dining room! 😉
